Star of India
Star of India, located on College Avenue and Harvard Street, is a locally owned, Fort Collins, Colorado restaurant. This restaurant is owned by the Jaura family who are originally from Northwest India and has been in business for 15 years.
"We really liked this town, my family has lived all over the world, including places like Canada and England, we loved Fort Collins and realized it's such a great restaurant town," said Jaura.
According to Lavie Jaura, Star of India prides themselves on their authentic but versatile menu. This leads to their diverse customer base which includes; children, college students, families, business parties and multiple regulars, like the 97-year-old woman who dines in on a weekly basis.
They differentiate themselves from other Indian food restaurants in town, like the Taj Mahal, by their ability to cater directly to the Fort Collins crowd due to being located here for over a decade. "We are locally owned and operated, we really care and try to make business with other locals in the community," said Jaura.

The Ordering Process
In order to ensure that each customer has the best experience, the Star of India staff asks a few starting questions.
The first being if there is a particular sauce the customer has in mind. They then ask about dietary restrictions or allergies and place you on a regular, vegetarian, gluten-free, or dairy-free path. Star of India was awarded Best Vegetarian Choice at the 2010 Taste of Fort Collins. One of their specialties is the ability to make Naan according to these restrictions, which is nearly impossible to find in the U.S. Foods come in various spice choices as well; mild, medium or hot, which are all made from scratch. With all the choices, there is sure to be an option that caters to each individual’s needs. |
My Experience
I went with four of my friends on Monday night and was lucky to find it was the night of their $13.99 dinner buffet. This was a good way to try all of the food and discover what we liked and didn’t like.
Although the food looked unfamiliar I was pleasantly surprised by it as well as the professional atmosphere and authentic décor. I suggest going to the everyday lunch buffet for $8.95 or the Monday night dinner buffet for the best deal, at least until you have established your favorite dish.
I recommend the Chicken Tikka Masala, Basmati Rice, Saag and the Mango Lassi for dessert. Naan bread is the perfect edition to each course.
It is important to keep an open mind when trying new foods; it’s easy to judge a meal by the appearance. We went in hesitant and came out full and satisfied. I highly recommend the Star of India to anyone willing to get out of their comfort zone and try something new, you will not be disappointed.
